a partial thaw, patches of white skin
not yet shed, shapeshifters far below
slowly becoming water.

Snowbound and hidebound winter
clings to a body warming up, nations
of hibernations yawning awake.
Long covered up like seeds of ideas
in the frozen mind, the stems stitch
upward, prickle the turned backs
of hills, shatter the cold glass wind,
set it all in motion again.

Our blood too may crack its ice,
like warm water rise again
from roots to mountaintops,
flood the cold world we live in.
The dead season peels off one sleeve
at a time. Icicle fingers poke us
to build a fire on the frozen river,
stoke it to burn through and flow
in the stream not too far below.
