      Waiting for Daylight

 

Dorcas just knew. She knew it

Deep somewhere in the middle of her.

She decided early to pay it little notice

What with the kids and Orville all needin’

And wantin’ and pullin’ at her skirt.

But there it was and it stayed on way past time

You’d think it’ve give out.

First she fell off some, and proud like

She prissed around in her old clothes.

She’s found them laid back ‘cause

She’d got too fleshy, but they was too good

 To drop in the poor box.

 

She finally give up and went on to see old doc,

And he looked in her eyes and ears and thumped

Around some, but he told her he never saw nothing

All that remarkable, his very word.

So she went on home and kept falling off.

Her eldest, Suzanne, said Dorcas was her shrinking

Mommy. They had a real good laugh at that.

  

Last night, she couldn’t sleep again, and with Orville

On the night shift, she turned on the light to give

Herself a look all over with no curious eyes

Peeping at her. What she seen she decided

Right then and there. it was a sure fact.

“Why”, she said, “I am seeing the last of me!”

 

There was nothing else for it than to strap

It on.  Ain’t nothing on earth can fix this.

She whispered to herself ,”When it’s time, its time”.

She took  tender thoughts for her little girls,

But Orville would just have to make the best of it.

The thought of him being irritated made her laugh.

 

It makes me glad to know a smile played in her eyes

While she stood there facing what we all must face someday. 

Wonder if I can be that brave? ‘course I won’t be escaping

Orville and that just could make all the difference.
