I was thinking of the sun
lucky old sun
who would not feel lucky
if everyone you smile at smiles back

I was thinking what a happy coincidence
that the sun is 1.496 x 10⁸ km from earth
just right to warm us but not fry us

I was thinking how precious a phenomenon
is gravity and that earth weighing
5.97219 x 10²⁴ kg has just enough of it
to keep our atmosphere from drifting away

I was thinking about the solar wind
blowing atomic particles everywhere at 750 km/s
and how that would blast away everything
if the earth were not protected
by this powerful magnetic field nobody really understands

I was thinking about how people wonder
why there is life on this little planet
and I was thinking
how could there not be

    Thanks Allison. To come clean I am also writing for another challenge, this one sponsored by Avocet nature journal (definitely a warm fuzzy). The challenge is to submit five poems about the sun and five about saving the earth. To be honest I probably would not have written these poems without the prompt but I’m glad you like them. The tone is kind of growing on me, maybe there will be more.
