I’ve been reading and writing all morning

except for a short walk out to the garden

in my pajamas, bare feet wet in the grass.

 

Storms from yesterday have toppled the tallest

sunflowers, others lean like corn stalks

after a wind. A few trees felled in other yards.

 

Another handful of snow peas tender

enough to eat stem end and all, long

after its season, even in this heat. 

 

Just a deep breath in and a slow audible 

exhale through the mouth 

resulting in an empty swell.
