Though you’re sleepy-eyed,
pink-nosed, your bones
as soft as yarn,
though the backyard of the world
is bigger than any you’ve dreamed of,
keep your heart steady
in the hands of the lonely girl. 

And don’t shiver
when your father goes away
and your white fur is stained
with coffee and the shadows
from the swing set.
Settle by the side of the girl,
your ears creased like shields
in the bluest slice of night.

Small thing, have courage
as you curl up for the last sleep
like the gloves of a prizefighter.
Though your joints howl with the years,
walk them again.

Burrow back through the dirt of days,
chasing the seconds over the asphalt,
and when you finally tire, know
she has made a bed in her heart just for
you.
