A harvest moon on the horizon, big like an orange balloon against a child’s nose
was my last fix until
a little girl giggled chasing fireflies.
We sat back to front and I breathed past your ear
your sweet alyssum hair draped
on my nose tickled free loose tears.
I walk through the woods agitated like a junkie looking
for a line every hour, in and out of a bathroom stall hunting
the forest.  A leaf rustles in the breeze, its edges like saw teeth biting at a branch,
an apple rots on the forest floor its flesh oozing into acrid loam,
a gaunt wolf, fur-knotted bares its teeth at me arched on the edge of howling.

I beg you to meet, to ease the voice in my head demanding one more vision, one more touch, one more sound, one taste of sour breath from lips touching, the smell of woman sweat post-orgasm.
We sleep and once in my restless waking I unhinge
at the thinness of your eyelid holding back REM pulses like a nine-month fetus, like an ocean that has swallowed flecks of green anemone crashing the shore.

In the small hours I wake and stagger
out the door facing East, bloodshot-crazed eye awaiting
the rise of pinkness bent by eager prisms. I am very aware of my tongue
its swollen dryness clogging my esophagus.  The day drug
on and I pursued overly aware
of a boy running fully smiling his short legs pounding the grass as he leapt
belly laughing into daddy arms,
of the ebb and flow
of wet and dry – a sudden burst of rain leaving drops on a lily dissolving nectar to drip
of a sodden matted-hair girl staring at herself in a puddle, then stomping it with her pink boots shuddering in excitement as drizzle spilled over her legs, her face scrunched by warmness,
of lovers etched in a scene of pursue and wait
of kiss and tell, press and space within an embrace, they parted by lip,
a presence leaving a film of absence on the mouth.

The day fades into darkness and the moon rises, this time a murky glow shrouds its edges.
A mouse who feels
beauty runs his tail and scratchy-pad paws through spilled ink on the desk onto paper consistently passes on a sip of water or a bite to eat, eventually dies from beauty overdose.
I perpetuate the lie that writing forces the true self to launch.
There is no recovery.  Beauty is the higher power.
