KY Great Writers, Spring 2015

KY Great Writers Spring 2015The KY Great Writers Series will be tonight at the Carnegie Center for Literacy and Learning in Lexington, KY. An open mic will precede the event at 7pm and sign-ups will begin shortly before that.

Joe Survant Joe Survant hails from Owensboro and was the Poet Laureate of Kentucky from 2003-2004. His newest book, The Land We Dreamed: Poems(University Press of Kentucky) came out in February.

 

 

Eric Scott SutherlandEric Scott Sutherland is a hawk watcher, Kentucky creek walker, tree loving Lorax, community and event organizer, the author of two chapbooks and the full-length collection incommunicado (2007). pendulum (Accents Publishing) is his fourth book of poems. He is the creator and host of Holler Poets Series, a monthly celebration of literature and music since 2008. Eric makes his nest in Lexington. Follow Eric and Holler at www.ericscottsutherland.com.

Erin KeaneErin Keane recently released Demolition of the Promised Land, a collection of poetry that has Bruce Springsteen as “guide, ghost, and accidental guru” (source). She has also published Death-Defying Acts and The Gravity Soundtrack. She is also a pop culture writer with published articles all over the place.

Teen Howl 40 with Lily Embury

This month’s Teen Howl will feature Lily Embury with special adult guest Eric Scott Sutherland. Open mic signups begin at 5:45pm.

The monthly event features the best of Lexington’s young poets (including an open mic), and headlines an under 20-year-old featured poet as well as an accomplished guest in the poetry community. Founded in 2011 by Elizabeth Beck and Jay McCoy, the name is based off of Allen Ginsberg’s “Howl”, which the group read in pieces during their initial meetings.

Tuesday: Cesar Chavez Day Poetry Reading

This event will take place at the Worsham Theater in the University of Kentucky’s Student Center. According to the Facebook page, it will be “a celebration of activism, social justice, and a poetry reading by local students.”

Wednesday: SQecial Media’s 3rd Annual Glorious Picture-Poem Contest

sqecial's third annual glorious picture contestSQecial Media’s contest begins on Wednesday and will take submissions throughout the month of April (which is, of course, National Poetry Month!). They will have a poetry reading on April 12th.

The idea comes from Kenneth Patchen’s picture-poems.

Poetry Events Week of March 23, 2015

Holler 82 featuring Sarah McCartt-Jackson, Scott Daughtridge, Sheisty Khrist

Holler Logo by John LackeySarah McCartt-Jackson is a poet and folklorist whose topics tend to cover the natural world. Her latest chapbook is Vein of Stone from Porkbelly Press.

Scott Daughtridge is a short fiction writer hailing from Atlanta, Georgia. He is the creator of the “Lostintheletters” reading series at Atlanta’s Highland Ballroom.

Sheisty Khrist’s hip-hop roots go back much further than the writer of this blog post. As such, there’s not much to be said that hasn’t already, including (but not limited to) the news that his latest album, Cold Winter, is available now.

As always, Holler will be hosted by Eric Scott Sutherland and the open mic sign-ups start at 7pm (or, rather, as early as the sign-up sheet is available!).

The Thirteen at Centre College

The Thirteen is a multimedia art exhibition and performance created in honor of thirteen black girls and women who were lynched or otherwise killed in Kentucky from 1870 to 1908.

Originally The Thirteen was performed at Transylvania University in 2013. A reprisal of the show will be tomorrow, March 19th, 2015 at Centre College’s Norton Center for the Arts. The show features work from the following artists:

Pages & Pints 3 Ron Houchin, Denton Loving, & Eric Scott SutherlandPages & Pints will meet tomorrow night at Apollo’s Pizza in Richmond Kentucky. The guests will be Ron Houchin, Denton Loving, and Eric Scott Sutherland.

Ron Houchin lives across the Ohio River from his hometown of Huntington, West Virginia. You can read some of his poetry at Connotation Press, Cortland Review, Still: The Journaland Salmon PoetryHis latest collection of poetry is The Quiet Jars (Salmon Poetry).

According to his bio at Still: The Journal, Denton Loving “lives on a farm near the historic Cumberland Gap, where Tennessee, Kentucky and Virginia come together” (source). You can find some of his writing at Town Creek Poetry, a review of his latest book at The Tishman Reviewand an interview with the Rappahannock Review. His latest book of poetry is Crimes Against Birds (Main Street Rag Company 2014).

Eric Scott Sutherland might be—according to his poem “Kentucky is my body“:

a gun rack
locked in a spare bedroom
where quilts lay spread
across peaceful beds

T.A. Noonan

T.A. Noonan‘s four sparks fall tells the story of May Florence, a a budding poet about to join an elite Louisianan boarding school while her twin sister won’t. Noonan is also the Art Director for the Sundress Academy for the Arts, Associate Editor of Sundress Publications, and Founding Editor of Flaming Giblet Press.

Todd Clayton performs a “gospel brand of roots music” (source) and has nominated three times for the Cincinnati Entertainment Awards.

Caden Blincoe Outloud Festival

Caden Blincoe Outloud FestivalAs part of their Creative Writing Vision Program, Thomas More College is hosting their 23rd Annual Caden Blincoe Outloud Festival on Sunday, February 15th from 2-4pm.

According to their press release, the Festival will have:

Readings and book signings by Writer in Residence Pauletta Hansel, TMC alumna Karen George, local author-musician Roberta Schultz and awarded regional authors Richard Hague and Ron Houchin.  Music by Sunset Dawn, with TMC professor Sherry Cook Stanforth. All are welcome to attend this annual celebration of writers and writing. Wine and appetizer reception begins at 1:45 pm.

Thomas More College is also hosting a seven-week seminar designed “to help deepen engagement in all aspects of the poetic process”.

Emily Dickinson Arts Fest

Emily DickinsonNorthern Kentucky University is celebrating the work of Emily Dickinson, featuring an art exhibition titled I took my Power in my Hand , a two-day marathon reading of Dickinson’s work, and various lectures and readings.
