Joseh Allen Nichols is a Graduate Assistant for the Bluegrass Writer’s Studio at Eastern Kentucky University. Kristen Roach-Thompson is the MFA Program Specialist for EKU’s Creative Writing Program. Today, they’ll be discussing the newest issue of Jelly Bucket, EKU’s annual literary journal produced by their MFA graduate students. Accents Radio 11/15/13: Sam Zalutsky

Today Katerina will be sitting down with filmmaker Sam Zalutsky. Be sure to tune in at 2pm on WRFL 88.1 Radio Free Lexington or click here to stream it on the web.

Sam Zalutsky has receieved commendations for his short films from such prestigious organizations as Reel New York and New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. His films have even aired on the Independent Film Channel (IFC). His first feature film, You Belong to Me, was short-listed for the Independent Spirit Award’s Someone to Watch Award and is currently available on DVD and Pay Per View.

Currently, Zalutsky teaches screenwriting at the low residency MFA program at Spalding University.

Kremena Todorova was born in communist Bulgaria and currently teaches American Literature at Transylvania University. She is an Associate Professor and Program Director for the English Department. Kurt Grohde teaches Studio Art at Transy. He is an Associate Professor and Program Director for the Art Department. Together, they are most known for the Passing photography series, which highlights local drag queens. They are also known for the DISCARDED project.

Accents Radio 11/01/13: Brigit Truex

Today’s guest on Accents Radio will be poet Brigit Truex. Tune in at 2pm on WRFL 88.1 or listen online.

Brigit Truex is a Native American poet and storyteller of Abenaki and Cree heritage. She began writing at the Santa Barbara Writers Conference and has been involved with poetry communities in such places as California, Massachusetts, and Maryland. She has been published in such journals as Atlanta Review, Folio, Rattlesnake Review, and Poetry Depth Quarterly. Truex’s poetry collections are Satuit Seasons (1986), Of a Feather, Leaf by Leaf, and A Counterpane Without (2007 Rattlesnake Press).

Jane Gentry Vance has published two full-length collections of poetry, A Garden in Kentucky and Portrait of the Artist as a White Pig, from Louisiana State University Press. Her poems have appeared in journals such as Sewanee Review, Hollins Critic, Harvard Magazine, New Virginia Review, Southern Poetry Review, and The American Voice. She was Kentucky’s Poet Laureate from 2007 to 2008.

Accents Radio 10/25/13: Ross Gay

On today’s episode of Accents Radio, Katerina will be interviewing poet Ross Gay. In addition, there will be another installment of “Accents on Books with LIsa Williams”.

Ross Gay has published two poetry collections, Bringing Down the Shovel (2011 University of Pittsburgh Press) and Against Which (2006 CavanKerry Press) as well as publishing poems in such journals as American Poetry Review, Harvard Review, and Atlanta Review. He currently teaches at Indiana University in Bloomington.

Richard Taylor is a professor of English and currently serves as Kenan Visiting Writer at Transylvania University. A former Kentucky poet laureate, he is the author of six collections of poetry, two novels, and several books of non-fiction, mostly relating to Kentucky history. A former dean and teacher in the Governor’s Scholars Program, he was selected as Distinguished Professor at Kentucky State University in 1992. He has won two creative writing fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and an Al Smith Creative Writing Award from the Kentucky Arts Council. He and his wife Lizz own Poor Richard’s Books in Frankfort, Kentucky.

Jim Kates’ “Most Important Thing”

J. Kates is a poet, literary translator and the president and co-director of Zephyr Press. He received a National Endowment for the Arts Creative Writing Fellowship in Poetry in 1984 and a Translation Project Fellowship in 2006, as well as an Individual Artist Fellowship from the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts in 1995. He is the translation editor of Contemporary Russian Poetry, and the editor of In the Grip of Strange Thoughts: Russian Poetry in a New Era. A former president of the American Literary Translators Association, he is also the co-translator of three books of Latin American poetry, and has a chapbook of his own poems, Mappemonde (Oyster River).

Today’s featured guests on Accents Radio will be Lynnell Edwards and Julia Johnson to discuss the Writer’s Block Festival in Louisville, KY, among other things. Plus, special guests Kate Greenstreet and Peter Davis will drop by to discuss their reading at the Black Sheep Reading Series at Black Swan Books in Lexington!

Lynnell Edwards is the author of three poetry collections from Red Hen Press: Covet (2011), The Highwayman’s Wife (2007), and The Farmer’s Daughter (2003). She is currently Spalding University’s Associate Professor of English and teaches creative writing at The Carnegie Center in Lexington. She currently lives in Louisville, KY.

Julia Johnson

Julia Johnson

Julia Johnson’s poetry has been published in such journals as Third Coast, Poetry International, Cake Train, and more. Her first collection, Naming the Afternoon (2002), was published in 2002 by The Louisiana State University Press and her second book, The Falling Horse (2002) came out of Factory Hollow Press. She is currently an Associate Professor of English at the University of Kentucky.

The Writer’s Block Festival “celebrates literature and the writing craft” (from their website). It will feature Frank X Walker, Timothy Gautreaux, and many more! The event begins Friday night at the Bard’s Town Tavern and continues Saturday on East Market Street in the NuLu shopping and entertainment district.
