Helen Steene is a painter and mixed media artist. Born in Sweden, Steene moved to the United States in 1976. Her work will be featured this Sunday at the Headley-Whitney Museum off Old Frankfort Pike in Lexington, KY.

Steene describes her work as such:

Whether my work is non-objective, abstract or figurative, there is always a search for something that signifies a subtle inner beauty, depth and simplicity even when the forms are complex.

Accents Radio 9/20/13: Saul Williams

Saul WilliamsFor Accents Radio, Katerina Stoykova-Klemer will be interviewing Saul Williams today on WRFL 88.1FM at 2PM.

Saul Williams is an accomplished poet, musician, and performer with such credits as the 1996 documentary SlamNation, many critically acclaimed albums (including Saul Williams and The Inevitable Rise of Niggy Tardust), and several books of poetry.

Williams will also be a celebrity judge for the Wild Women of Poetry Slam at Transylvania University’s Carrick Theatre tonight at 6:30-9:30 (hosted by Bianca Spriggs!) followed by a performance in partnership with WRFL’s Boomslang at Natasha’s Bistro at 10PM.

Check out the show, but also, don’t forget about Stars with Accents this Sunday at 7PM at the Carnegie Center as well as the other festivities for the Kentucky Women’s Writer’s Conference and Boomslang!

Accents Radio 9/13/13: Eric Scott Sutherland

Eric SutherlandEric Scott Sutherland founded the Holler Poets Series over 5 years ago. They meet on the last Wednesday of every month at Al’s Bar in Lexington, KY with an open mic session followed by two or three featured artists.

The Fountain of St. James CourtToday at 2PM on 88.1 WRFL Radio Free Lexington, Katerina Stoykova-Klemer will sit down with Sena Jeter Naslund.

Sena Jeter Naslund is the author of Ahab’s Wife, Four Spirits, and Abundance, a Novel of Marie Antoinette. Her new novel, The Fountain of St. James Court: or, Portrait of the Artist as an Old Woman, will be available on September 17th from William Morrow. Don’t forget to check in at 2PM!

Today on Accents Radio, Katerina will be interviewing Pushcart Prize winning poet Philip White.

White’s first book, The Clearing (2007 Texas Tech University Press), won the Walt MacDonald Prize. His work has appeared (or is slated to) in The New Republic, Slate, Poetry, Agni, New England Review, The Southern Review, and The Hudson Review. He currently teaches at Centre College.

Mr. Walker’s newest book, Turn Me Loose: The Unghosting of Medgar Evers, is currently available from University of Georgia Press. He is also known for his biographical collection of poems about jockey Isaac Murphy, I Dedicate This Ride from Old Cove Press as well as coining the term “Affrilachia” and helping found the Affrilachian Poets.

Elaine Neil Orr on Accents Radio

Katerina Stoykova-Klemer hosts Accents Radio every Friday from 2-3PM on 88.1 WRFL Lexington. This week’s guest is Elaine Neil Orr, author of the memoir Gods of Noonday: A White Girl’s African Life and the new novel A Different Sun.

Growing up in the savannahs and rain forests of Nigeria, Orr’s parents remained there during the country’s civil war while she left at sixteen and studied creative writing and literature at the University of Louisville. She earned a Ph.D. in Literature and Theology at Emory University and is an award-winning professor of literature and creative non-fiction at North Carolina State University. She is also on the faculty at Spalding University’s low-residency MFA program.

Her memoirs and short fiction have appeared in The Missouri Review, Shenandoah, BlackbirdPrime Numberand Image Journal as well as earning her several Pushcart Prize nominations. She has earned grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the North Carolina Arts Council, and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts.
