Poetry Reading: Circe’s Lament: Anthology of Wild Women Poetry

The Wild Fig Coffee & Books will be hosting a reading from Accents Publishing’s newest release Circe’s Lament: Anthology of Wild Women Poetry this upcoming Thursday, December 17th. Many of the contributors from the anthology will be reading, including:

Circe’s Lament has been described by Cecilia Woloch, author of the 2014 Two Sylvias Press Chapbook Prize Earth and Narcissus, as a “celebration of the wild feminine: the fierce, the furious, the bruised and battered, the hilarious, the mythical, the stereotypical, the fairytale turned inside out.”

Teen Howl #40 featuring Lily Embury

Teen Howl 40 with Lily Embury

This month’s Teen Howl will feature Lily Embury with special adult guest Eric Scott Sutherland. Open mic signups begin at 5:45pm.

The monthly event features the best of Lexington’s young poets (including an open mic), and headlines an under 20-year-old featured poet as well as an accomplished guest in the poetry community. Founded in 2011 by Elizabeth Beck and Jay McCoy, the name is based off of Allen Ginsberg’s “Howl”, which the group read in pieces during their initial meetings.

Tuesday: Cesar Chavez Day Poetry Reading

This event will take place at the Worsham Theater in the University of Kentucky’s Student Center. According to the Facebook page, it will be “a celebration of activism, social justice, and a poetry reading by local students.”

Wednesday: SQecial Media’s 3rd Annual Glorious Picture-Poem Contest

sqecial's third annual glorious picture contestSQecial Media’s contest begins on Wednesday and will take submissions throughout the month of April (which is, of course, National Poetry Month!). They will have a poetry reading on April 12th.

The idea comes from Kenneth Patchen’s picture-poems.

Pages & Pints 3 Ron Houchin, Denton Loving, & Eric Scott SutherlandPages & Pints will meet tomorrow night at Apollo’s Pizza in Richmond Kentucky. The guests will be Ron Houchin, Denton Loving, and Eric Scott Sutherland.

Ron Houchin lives across the Ohio River from his hometown of Huntington, West Virginia. You can read some of his poetry at Connotation Press, Cortland Review, Still: The Journaland Salmon PoetryHis latest collection of poetry is The Quiet Jars (Salmon Poetry).

According to his bio at Still: The Journal, Denton Loving “lives on a farm near the historic Cumberland Gap, where Tennessee, Kentucky and Virginia come together” (source). You can find some of his writing at Town Creek Poetry, a review of his latest book at The Tishman Reviewand an interview with the Rappahannock Review. His latest book of poetry is Crimes Against Birds (Main Street Rag Company 2014).

Eric Scott Sutherland might be—according to his poem “Kentucky is my body“:

a gun rack
locked in a spare bedroom
where quilts lay spread
across peaceful beds

Caden Blincoe Outloud Festival

Caden Blincoe Outloud FestivalAs part of their Creative Writing Vision Program, Thomas More College is hosting their 23rd Annual Caden Blincoe Outloud Festival on Sunday, February 15th from 2-4pm.

According to their press release, the Festival will have:

Readings and book signings by Writer in Residence Pauletta Hansel, TMC alumna Karen George, local author-musician Roberta Schultz and awarded regional authors Richard Hague and Ron Houchin.  Music by Sunset Dawn, with TMC professor Sherry Cook Stanforth. All are welcome to attend this annual celebration of writers and writing. Wine and appetizer reception begins at 1:45 pm.

Thomas More College is also hosting a seven-week seminar designed “to help deepen engagement in all aspects of the poetic process”.

Emily Dickinson Arts Fest

Emily DickinsonNorthern Kentucky University is celebrating the work of Emily Dickinson, featuring an art exhibition titled I took my Power in my Hand , a two-day marathon reading of Dickinson’s work, and various lectures and readings.

Teen Howl is the first Thursday of every month (except when the first Thursday is some sort of holiday, or something) at 6pm at the Morris book shop. This week’s featured poet is John Newton.

The Carnegie Center for Literacy and Learning in Lexington, Kentucky is hosting it’s Kentucky Great Writers Series. One of the featured readers, Lisa Williams, is a recurring guest on Accents Radio, and was featured on August 29th’s Accents Radio show, as well as read as one of the features at the Kentucky Women Writers Conference’s Stars with Accents reading.

Williams will be reading from her Barnard Women Poets Prize winning poetry collection Gazelle in the House (New Issues Poetry & Prose 2014).

The event will also host Courtney C. Stevens and her debut novel, faking normal, as well as Don Lichtenfelt and his memoir from Wind Publications, Goodbye Lake Huron. And, as an additional treat, the event will be hosted by friend of Accents, Leatha Kendrick.

The open mic will start at 7:00pm, so be sure to find a seat a few minutes early.

Eric Scott Sutherland hosts another night of lyrics and libations with the debut of Lexington poet Iris Law. Kendra DeColo will also read and Marcus Wilkerson (of Tribe Called Lex) will provide a musical interlude.
