Free Poetry Events Week of March 30, 2015

Tuesday: Cesar Chavez Day Poetry Reading

This event will take place at the Worsham Theater in the University of Kentucky’s Student Center. According to the Facebook page, it will be “a celebration of activism, social justice, and a poetry reading by local students.”

Wednesday: SQecial Media’s 3rd Annual Glorious Picture-Poem Contest

sqecial's third annual glorious picture contestSQecial Media’s contest begins on Wednesday and will take submissions throughout the month of April (which is, of course, National Poetry Month!). They will have a poetry reading on April 12th.

The idea comes from Kenneth Patchen’s picture-poems.

Poetry Events Week of March 23, 2015

Holler 82 featuring Sarah McCartt-Jackson, Scott Daughtridge, Sheisty Khrist

Holler Logo by John LackeySarah McCartt-Jackson is a poet and folklorist whose topics tend to cover the natural world. Her latest chapbook is Vein of Stone from Porkbelly Press.

Scott Daughtridge is a short fiction writer hailing from Atlanta, Georgia. He is the creator of the “Lostintheletters” reading series at Atlanta’s Highland Ballroom.

Sheisty Khrist’s hip-hop roots go back much further than the writer of this blog post. As such, there’s not much to be said that hasn’t already, including (but not limited to) the news that his latest album, Cold Winter, is available now.

As always, Holler will be hosted by Eric Scott Sutherland and the open mic sign-ups start at 7pm (or, rather, as early as the sign-up sheet is available!).

Off the Ground featuring Eric Scott Sutherland

Off the Ground occurs monthly throughout the school year, and was created by the University of Kentucky’s creative writing organizations Limestone, Shale, and Graphite.

The Thirteen at Centre College

The Thirteen is a multimedia art exhibition and performance created in honor of thirteen black girls and women who were lynched or otherwise killed in Kentucky from 1870 to 1908.

Originally The Thirteen was performed at Transylvania University in 2013. A reprisal of the show will be tomorrow, March 19th, 2015 at Centre College’s Norton Center for the Arts. The show features work from the following artists:

Providing the music is Lexpatriate Sheri Streeter. Open mic begins and ends the show with signups beginning at 645pm. As usual, the Holler bucket will be available so you can support the artists. Free Poetry Events Week of 11/10/14

It looks like this Thursday is packed as The Lexington Youth Arts Council is having a poetry slam and the second “chapter” of “Pages and Pints” continues at Apollo Pizza in Richmond with Gurney Norman and Ed McClanahan.

Also, while not necessarily a poetry event, The Wild Fig New and Used Bookstore has been having a fundraising campaign on Indiegogo to raise money for expansion. The campaign ends this Saturday, Novemeber 15th, so check out their Facebook page for more information or go straight to Indiegogo. Continue reading
